How to Create an Outdoor Retreat

Turning the great outdoors (aka your backyard) into a serene getaway is all about the extras. While good anchor pieces (like patio furniture, a picnic table, and a barbecue) will have friends scrambling for an invite over, the right accents are what will make them wish they never had to leave.

Here are a few of our favorite elements of an idyllic backyard getaway.

A Hammock

Nothing says backyard retreat like a hammock. It’s a prime place to read a book or catch some Z’s. Don’t have two trees to tie it between? No problem. There are options that come with posts, or stands that will let you place your hammock anywhere.

A Rug

Yes you read that right. An outdoor rug is a simple, easy way to add warmth as well as visual interest (patterns, anyone?) to your patio area. Pick a piece (like the rug below) that’s easy to clean and that won’t fade in the sunlight.

A Lounger

If a hammock isn’t up your alley, opt for another piece of patio furniture that lets you kick back, like a lounger, instead. This lounger not only lets you lean back and relax (with ergonomics that align with your body), but it has an adjustable  headrest to cushion your head . Backyard bliss!

A Shady Spot

Eating in the blazing sun isn’t everyone’s ideal. Those who prefer a shadier set up can opt for a picnic umbrella, or go one step further by erecting a tent or fabric gazebo. Be sure to choose a sturdy frame with easy-to-clean fabric that blocks UV rays.

Dramatic Lighting

House lights are for amateurs. An outdoor oasis needs a warm, romantic glow. Achieve it with a mix of wooden torches and candles. We also dig these pretty wooden lanterns. They’re the perfect way to subtly light your patio or make a pretty centerpiece on a picnic table.

A Throw Blanket

Even summer nights get chilly. Keep warm outside with a few soft throws. Pick blankets that are not only cozy but easy-to-clean, like this machine washable indoor-outdoor throw.

A Bench

If you don’t want to just gaze at your garden from the porch, it’s easy to create an area where you can sit and admire it up close. This pretty green bench is the perfect addition, especially after you add some outdoor toss pillows.

A Fountain

Nothing makes a backyard feel serene like a fountain. You don’t need something grand — a simple, classic piece will do. We adore this option’s vintage feel.
