Cinco de Mayo Cocktails

There are two popular misconceptions regarding Cinco de Mayo.  The first is that it celebrates Mexican Independence Day, which is really September 16th.  May 5th actually observes the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.  And the 2nd is that it’s all about the Margarita – and it’s not.  There are plenty of other fun celebratory drinks, and here are three of my favorite.

When it comes to beer, there’s not much more refreshing than this. It’s really just the perfect combination of lager beer, lime and ice. How do you spell refreshing? I spell it M-i-c-h-i-l-a-d-a.

Ingredients

4 limes

1/4 cup Kosher salt

Ice

12 ounces lager beer

Instructions

  1. Cut limes in half, and use one half to rub around rim of glasses.
  2. Put salt on a plate and push lime-edged rim into salt.
  3. Squeeze all limes into a tall glass and fill with ice.
  4. Add beer all the way up and drink.

Grapefruit soda

Tequila Sunrise Recipe

About as old school as they get, but well worth having again. And I realize it may be counter-intuitive, but the key to creating the sunrise is adding the Grenadine last.

Ingredients

Ice

2 ounces blanco or reposado Tequila

1 ounce Orange Juice

1/2 an ounce of Grenadine

Instructions

  1. Put ice in a rocks glass and add Tequila then Orange Juice.
  2. Slowly drizzle the Grenadine over the ice and watch as it sinks through to the bottom and creates the sunrise.
