Make Your Home Smell Squeaky Clean
I love the smell of my apartment on Monday afternoons, after my cleaning lady has worked her magic. Gone is the scent of broccoli I cooked for last night’s dinner and the salmon dog treats that I regretted buying the moment their stench filled my kitchen. Until next Monday, I’m on my own. So I’ve decided to look for some quick-fix solutions to keep my apartment smelling fresh and clean. Hopefully, they’ll help you too.
Make Like the Laundromat
If your happy place is a warm load of laundry straight from the dryer, tape fabric softener sheets onto your air conditioner filter under the grate. You’ll instantly become World’s Best Laundress. Another clever tip: Place scented beads near your dirty clothes hamper.
Strike a Candle
Melina Smith, who blogs about all kinds of home projects, floral and party décor, interior design, and more for Mel and Liza, says her foolproof refresher is a simple Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day scented candle.
“After hosting 30-plus on Sunday for brunch, my apartment was in desperate need of a little refreshing,” says Smith. “As soon as guests left, I opened the windows and lit some of my favorite scented candles.”
Fake the Bakery
Dab a few drops of vanilla extract on a cool light bulb and turn it on. As it heats up, you’ll smell an imaginary batch of sugar cookies. Or fill a pot of water on the stove with a few cinnamon sticks, cloves, and orange peel, and simmer. And of course, you could actually bake sugar cookies.
Go for a Deep Clean
Is your neighbor cooking curry again (without inviting you)? It’s time to invest in an air purifier. Look for one that uses high efficiency particulate air filters — HEPA, for short — that work overtime to eliminate odors. Secondly, make sure the air purifier is large enough for the room. Check the amount of square footage it can cover. You should be able to use the lowest setting for a positive result your nose will notice.
