We Totally Sleighed This Christmas Table
We stole inspiration from our holiday wardrobe to create a Christmas table that will warm your spirit and your frosty fingertips (we’re looking at you, mitten utensil holders). Read on to find out how you can cozy up to this look.
Copy Cute Christmas Sweaters
We chose two classic seasonal motifs: the red-bowed reindeer and robust plaid, which is having a major fashion moment. Both design elements feel as whimsical and special as the sweet Christmas sweater you pull out every year. How do you avoid tipping over into “ugly sweater” territory? Be aware of holiday symbol clutter. We skipped adding snowmen, Santas, or trees and ornaments to the table. One or two cheerful symbols are enough to make the point.
Dress in Layers
Layers work much the same way in fashion and design: They add warmth and interest to your ensemble. For this table, we emphasized contrast in each layer: The soft plaid tablecloth against chunky rattan placemats along with detailed plates and stemware. Each layer draws your attention and beckons you to lean in and join the party.
Choose Toasty Fabrics
The materials on this table are as warm as the welcome. We used hearty fabrics, like knit mittens trimmed with faux fur as flatware holders, a burlap runner, and a 100-percent cotton tablecloth. As a result, the scene is as inviting to the hand as it is to the eye.
Tie in Classic Style
Vintage touches turn up the charm and sophistication of our setting. We chose antiquey, stoneware plates and silverware that feature bead-like details you might find on hand-embroidered fabric. We kept the glasses unfussy and centerpiece minimal and light–there’s enough going on already. And your guests haven’t even arrived yet! But once they do, your table will be ready to sleigh the holiday.
