Not sure how to go about decorating your child’s bedroom? We asked Jessica McCarthy, creative director of Decorist, to help us out by sharing her picks.

For the Bed, Choose a Classic, Versatile Piece

The most important piece of furniture you’ll buy for your child’s bedroom is the bed. “Anchor the space with a timeless design like this vintage-inspired metal bed that’ll be used for years to come,” says McCarthy. “This one has a classic shape that’s extremely versatile and will work well in traditional or eclectic interiors. It’ll also work with whatever color palettes and patterns you choose in the future. I love how its casted, spindle detailing brings a bit of architectural detail to any room.”

X Marks the Spot

“I always love an X-base table, and this fashionable desk is no exception! Its white lacquered finish is sophisticated and modern, and looks fresh and youthful—perfect for a little one’s room,” McCarthy says. “Its streamlined drawer is the perfect spot to store homework and all the odds and ends children tend to collect!”

Go Glam!

“There’s no reason a kid’s room shouldn’t be glamorous,” says McCarthy. “This gorgeous campaign dresser certainly fits the bill. Crafted from solid hardwood with beautiful brass handles, it has substance and style. With six wide drawers, it also offers plenty of storage.Top it with a beautiful lamp, and style it with some personal accessories to complete the look.”

Get Comfy

A kid’s room has to be fun! McCarthy suggests a bean bag chair. “This plush faux-fur version looks elevated and is the perfect spot to read, relax, and play games. If space allows, pick up a pair to make play dates even more fun,” she suggests.

Choose Punchy Bedding

“I love this playful reversible comforter set, which packs a graphic punch with nautical navy-and-white stripes on one side and polka-dot brush strokes on the other side,” says McCarthy. “Soft pink and gold also adds color and contrast to give the room a more layered look. Your mini me will have fun switching it up whenever the mood strikes!”

Make Room for Playtime

Kids need a comfy space to sit down and play, which is why a cozy rug is a “must-have,” says McCarthy. She recommends this one, inspired by Moroccan colors and patterns. “Its multicolored design and fringed edges give it a bohemian feel and will look beautiful with stripes, florals, or whatever prints and patterns you find.”

Light It Up

“As designers, we often say that lighting is the jewelry of the home,” McCarthy tells us. “It’s the finishing touch that pulls it all together and can take any room from drab to fab!” She recommends a pendant, like this one. “The architectural woven design casts beautiful shadows, which are nothing short of mesmerizing.”
