How to Preserve Family Memories and Photos

Keep memories organized and easily accessible with these simple tips.

Over the years, you’ve no doubt created thousands of family memories. You’ve probably captured a bunch of them on film, too, and chances are you don’t want to lose them. Are we onto something? You’ve come to the right place. Check out our favorite ways to preserve memories and photos.

Scrapbooking is a great way to keep memories alive while making new ones. It’s easy, it’s fun, there are endless ways to customize, and you can get the whole family involved. Start with a scrapbook, choose photos (from a specific year, event, time period, or randomly), and go! Use color markers for writing names and dates, stickers for flair, and of course, your favorite photos. Don’t worry about making it too perfect. A scrapbook’s quirks make it great.

Go Digital

A lot of us have photos, the kind you store and vaguely organize in different boxes. Great news: digitize your photos and free up your closet space. You can hire a company like Legacybox to scan them for you, or you can do it yourself via Google’s app PhotoScan. Keep photos organized, within fingers’ reach. Having them stored electronically also helps to preserve your pictures from decay, damage, and fading.

Slideshow Display

With better picture quality and styles to fit any decor, digital frames have come a long way. They’re great if you’ve got tons of photos but not enough room—the slideshow feature lets you display a shelf full of pictures in one spot. They make great gifts for faraway family, too.

Sometimes, you just want to keep it classic. And there are plenty of frame options for those times as well. Pick up a few single photo frames, or make a collage. For a gallery wall effect, without all the hanging and measuring, we love the rod and frame set option. We also like to keep extra frames on hand at home. When you decide you’ve got a photo you want to keep, you can display it right away.

We all get cards and photos from family and friends that tend to pile up, but we don’t want to throw away. Now is the time to put on your creative cap. One idea we love? Photo books! Say you receive a family photo every year from a particular friend’s family. Save the photos and turn them into a book to gift the sender. They’ll love the sentiment and get a kick out of seeing how much everyone has grown!
