Hot Buttered Rum Coffee Cocktail Recipe

Look no further for a delicious way to end a holiday meal! The flavors of hot buttered rum and a dollop of homemade whipped cream turn after dinner coffee into something special. These winter warmers would also be welcome in front of the fireplace after a snowball fight or caroling stint.



  • Yield: 8 servings



For Buttered Rum Whipped Cream

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butterscotch schnapps
  • 2 Tablespoons dark rum

For Hot Buttered Rum Coffee

  • 6 cups (48 ounces) hot coffee
  • 1 1/2 cups butterscotch schnapps
  • 1 cup light cream or half and half
  • 1/2 cup dark rum
  • 1/2 cup Irish cream liqueur
  • 3 Tablespoons dark brown sugar
  • Garnish: cinnamon


  1. Make whipped cream: Beat heavy cream on high in a large bowl until it begins to thicken. Add remaining ingredients and beat until medium peaks form. May be made ahead and kept chilled, covered, for several hours before serving.
  2. Make cocktails: Combine Hot Buttered Rum Coffee ingredients in a large thermal carafe. Serve in small mugs or Irish coffee glasses topped with a dollop of Buttered Rum Whipped Cream and a dusting of cinnamon.
