Help Desk: Hacks to Clean Your Grill

If your grill has been getting a good workout this summer, it’s probably time you start thinking about giving it a clean. And we’ve got great news! You don’t need lots of tools or equipment to get the job done. We talked with Linda Cobb (AKA the Queen of Clean) for some tips. Here are three ways to clean your grill with things you probably already have on hand. Watch the video and try these out for yourself!

Onions: Nature’s Cleaner!

Who knew this vegetable was delicious and useful?

  • Slice an onion in half.
  • Spear one half with a cooking fork.
  • Run it over a warm grill rack.

Make a Scrubber Out of Aluminum Foil!

You may not have a grill brush, but we bet you’ve got aluminum foil.

  • After cooking, while the grill is still warm, take a large piece of aluminum foil (any type!) and crumple it into a ball.
  • Scrub the BBQ rack, like you would with a sponge, to clean off the burnt-on food and grease.
  • Toss the foil when you’re done.

Burn It off!

Use foil to superheat your grill racks, which will cook off any food residue.

  • Make sure the grill is cool. Cover the grill rack with a layer of aluminum foil. If you have heavy-duty aluminum foil, use that. Otherwise any foil will work.
  • Tuck it under the edges of the grill rack.
  • Close the lid and heat the grill on high for 10-15 minutes.
  • Carefully open the hot lid, and using tongs, remove the foil, and let it cool.
  • Toss the foil into the trash outside your home.
  • Use a brush or scraper to remove the ash and food from the grill.
